Advice For Teens Going Through Divorce

The majority of our blogs are designed for adults going through the divorce process, but in today’s post, our divorce lawyers are switching it up and giving some advice for teens whose parents are going through a divorce. Watching your parents get a divorce is painful no matter how old you are, but most advice is geared toward younger children. However, divorce affects everyone within the family and can be especially hard for teenagers. Continue reading to learn more.

Talk With Someone

During a divorce, it’s important to find someone you can talk to that’s outside of your family. Whether that’s a trusted adult, a friend, or a therapist, talking will help lighten your emotional load. Expressing your feelings to someone who is listening and can acknowledge what you’re going through can make a world of difference.

You Don’t Have To Take A Side

Sometimes in contentious divorces, kids can feel trapped in the middle and like they need to choose sides. Remember, this is their drama and conflict, not yours.

Remember, You’re Not Your Parents’ Therapist

Parents can end up wanting to discuss the divorce with their kids, especially teenagers. They may want to share their side of the story, but calmly tell them that you don’t want to get involved and suggest that they see a therapist or divorce coach to help process their feelings.

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask For Help

Many teens feel a combination of anger, guilt, and betrayal during a divorce. Even though you’re older, that doesn’t mean you don’t need information and empathy from your parents. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you need or express your feelings, including anger.

Don’t Step Into Court Proceedings

Even if you support one parent more than the other, avoid getting involved with litigation. It’s a stressful experience (which is why it’s important to have a divorce lawyer) and you don’t need to be involved in it. You can make a written statement or talk to your parent’s divorce lawyers outside of court, but avoid testifying in court.

It’s Ok To Have Fun

Part of taking care of yourself is doing what you love and having fun. Just because you’re in a sad and stressful situation doesn’t mean that it’s not ok to have fun. Go out with your friends and take care of yourself! After all, you can only support others when you take care of yourself.
