Celebrating Christmas or Hanukkah during Divorce and Custody Battles
If you are going through or have gone through a divorce, you might dread the thought of spending the Christmas or Hanukkah season alone. It can be stressful, emotional, and not very fun, especially if there are children involved. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. Even though there are some negative things going on in your life, you can still enjoy the holiday. In this blog we will offer you a few tips for making this time of the year as pleasant as possible.
Tips for Celebrating the Holidays with Children during a Divorce
This is probably the most important tip of all that will be listed. You will need to consider your needs, the other person’s needs, and your children’s needs. You will need to negotiate and plan a schedule that works for everyone, and this will not happen if you are not flexible. A custody arrangement can help but if there is not one in place, then do your best to make the holidays work for everyone.
Focus on Your Children
If you have children, they will be going through a time of adjustment too. Make some new traditions together. Your child or children will look to you for emotional cues, but even if they have a good time, it’s understandable that they may have some feelings of sadness. Keep it all in perspective and be supportive.
Meet Your Needs
When everything else is not working out exactly like you want it to make sure that you do what you can to enjoy yourself. Don’t neglect your needs and the things you want to do during the holidays. Spend time with your friends and family. Go out and have a good time. It will keep the holiday from getting you down.
Be Positive When The Unexpected Happens
You only have so much control in these situations, and not everything is going to go exactly like you want it. When the unexpected happens the best thing you can do is keep a good attitude and see the positive. That may be easier said than done, but you’ll be happy that you did.
